Fruit Juice & Your Teeth: A Message From Your Dentist | Dentist in Downers Grove IL

Don’t be misled by the label “100 percent fruit juice.” While these drinks might seem like a healthy choice, they can actually harm your teeth. Fruit juices contain sugar, which can lead to tooth decay. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has recently updated its recommendations regarding fruit juice consumption for children. Here’s what you need to know about these new guidelines.

No Fruit Juice for Infants Under 12 Months
Previously, the AAP advised against giving fruit juice to infants younger than 6 months old. However, this year, they’ve revised this recommendation to discourage fruit juice for any infant aged 12 months and younger.

Fruit Juice: Vitamins and Sugar
While fruit juice can provide essential vitamins and minerals like vitamin C and potassium, it’s often high in sugar. According to a study reported by Medical News Today, fruit juice may contain as much as 2 teaspoons of sugar per 100 milliliters.

Fruit Juice and Tooth Decay
Sugar is a major contributor to tooth decay, especially in children. The AAP cautions against serving fruit juice to toddlers and young children in “sippy cups” as these cups expose teeth to sugar for longer periods, increasing the risk of decay.

Moderation is Key
According to the updated AAP guidelines, moderation is crucial. While children under 12 months shouldn’t have fruit juice, older children can have limited amounts. The AAP recommends a maximum of 4 ounces of fruit juice per day for children aged 1 to 3, 4 to 6 ounces per day for children aged 4 to 6, and 8 ounces per day for those aged 7 to 18. Diluting juice with water can reduce sugar intake.

Benefits for Adults Too
It’s not just children who should be mindful of sugary drinks. Sugar contributes to decay in adults as well. Limiting sugary drink intake is essential for oral health.
